Swedish Chameleon got the assignment to develop custom GoPro and IPhone head-rigs for Adidas.
The rigs were to be used filming marathon runner’s faces during the Berlin Marathon in September 2011.

The challenge:

Mount 23 GoPros and 1 IPhone on the head of runners that will run more than 40 kilometers for up to 5 hours with the camera in front of their face. It had to be lightweight, comfortable, steady and adjustable.
We tried every solution you can imagine.

The Solution:

We based the final solution on a lamp-rig for orienteer’s on which we attached a lightweight aluminum bow, adjustable for head size and camera angle. To get center of weight on top of the head we put a 4500mah battery pack and some metal weights on the back, it served as a perfect counter weight, stabilizer and power pack. The rig was also equipped with rain protection for the lens and battery.

All runners finished the rigs where intact (but soaking wet) and the response was god, some runners actually beat their personal best.

The IPhone was live streaming during the whole marathon and the GoPros did a great job!

Watch the faces:

Niklas Johansson, FSF

My career began in light before I went over to film photography.
After high school I started working for Roy Andersson and made allot of television series.
On weekends I made hip hop videos and short films. Recent years I have worked mostly abroad.
By now I’ve made about 50 music videos, some 40 commercials, two feature films ”The Wedding Date” and ”Bitch Hug”

Made music videos for, among others:
A-Camp, Adam Tensta, KENT, Peter, Veronica Maggio, Snook, Daniel Adams-Ray, Ison & Fille, Henok, Erik Hassle, et al.

Customers, among others:
Nike, T-Mobile, IKEA, Texas Longhorn, Lantmännen, Stadium, GANT, EF, Aladdin, Bjorn Borg, Peak Performance, Bob juice, Lidl, the Swedish Church, Stockholm Film Festival, Polar Prize, 3, Electrolux, Eniro, On Off, Scandic, eBay, Aftonbladet, MSN Messenger, Dairy Close, Ericsson, Friends, Tele 2, Brisbane

The advantage of shooting with a HDSLR is that it is easy and small, eazy to bring along. So why kill the idea?
I have tried lots rigs and all these are based on counterweights and are big and heavy.
Then you might as well shoot with a big camera. Therefore, I use Swedish Chameleon. It retain the flexibility.

Live the language – Vancouver from EF Intl. Language Centers on Vimeo.

I began my journey with my Swedish Chameleon for about a year ago when I was filming for EF learn a language.
I went to: Sydney, Vancouver, LA, Paris, Barcelona, London, Beijing, New York, etc.
To travel with the Swedish Chameleon was a pleasure! Easy to throw over your shoulder, fits in your backpack, durable, very nice follow focus, playful, expandable. Just what you need on such a journey!

In 2008 I presented the now day’s cult classic: Lilla Al-Fadji & Co. The TV-series was directed by me for Swedish Kanal 5. With over a million views on Youtube it still has a huge cult following among the younger crowd.

I have worked my way up through the production line, learning the craft of filmmaking along the way. My first job was as a production assistant at Gem film, (Jonas Frick´s Production Company), in 1994 In ´96-´98 Oh-la-la had the pleasure to have me full-time as a director´s assistant and editor on commercials. this is where I also got my first assignment’s as a director on several music videos.

As an assistant unit manager on ”Dancer in the Dark” with Björk and Lars von Trier, I got the first taste of the world of feature films.
Since then I have had the pleasure of working as First AD on several successful feature films such as Ondskan, Lilja 4-ever, Populärmusik från Vittula and Nokas amongst others, working with directors like Lukas Moodysson, Thomas Alfredsson, Mikael Håfström and Erik Skjoldberg to name a few.

This summer, I produced, directed and wrote my first feature film – “Burning Hearts”, an indie film set for release spring/summer 2012.
”Burning Hearts”, is primarily shot handheld and I choose I Swedish Chameleon for support. Having previously used Swedish Chameleon for some DSLR-stuff but I was confident it would work with the Panasonic HPX-171 as well. And it did.

The Swedish Chameleon is so versatile and light and adapting the rig for different shots is quick and easy. With such a light camera and rig, we were able to do some amazing stuff, even holding it high above our heads for some shots.

The curved handles are my favourite part. Gotta love them handles.
All in all The Swedish Chameleon is my preferred handheld rig. It rocks.

We have been working on a small rig-mounted mic preamp for proffesional filmmakers with HDSLRs in mind.
Now we are near release, so here are som pre-relese info.

Key notes

++ Makes the audio recorder in your camera perform
its very best.

++ Clean audio pass and top of the line circuits, resulting in super Hi-Fi audio quality.

++ One single camera to amp calibration is needed to give full
monitoring and recording control.

++ One single knob for each mike amplifier. No selection of mike amp
range is needed. The total range from 13 dB to more than 70dB gain is
all there between your finger tips.

++ No extra level control mismatch noise, as the knobs are directly
controlling the mike amps’ gain factors.

++ No internal ”invisible” overload is possible.

++ What you *see* is what you *hear* is what you *get*!

The Amplifier

4 balanced, transformer less XLR-inputs. Fairly high, 7 kohm input
impedance (makes your dynamic microphones happy). 48V phantom feed -
selectable for each input. Bass roll off: -3dB @ 40 Hz.

Main output: 2-channel output. Maximum output level is adjustable
from +9dBu to -∞.

Additional outputs: Direct outputs from each microphone amplifier for
4-channel recording. Output levels are determined by the present mike
amp gain settings. Maximum output level is +9dBu.

Monitoring

10-segment, 2-channel bar graph meter with ”human” release speed.

High end, high gain head phones amplifier. Selectable source or
recorder monitoring. 3 monitoring modes: Stereo – Mono left channel -
Mono right channel (mono means in both ears!)

Separate camera (or recorder) return amplifiers with adjustable
gain from 0dB to +40dB, for perfect matching of source/recorder
monitor levels.

Tone

High frequency, wide level range calibration tone selectable for one
mike channel. The tone can be used to control non-deselectable AGC:s
in cameras and other recorders.

Tobias Höiem-Flyckt, fsf

My 20 years of experience in photography and cinematography began as a photo assistant to Kenneth Gunnarsson in the north of Sweden. After studying in Denmark at the European Film College, I moved to Stockholm to continue my studies at the Stockholm Film School. From 1998, I worked as best boy, first and second assistant camera at various film and advertising productions, meanwhile shooting various short films and music videos as cinematographer. In 2001 I began studying cinematography at the “Dramatiska Institutet” (Swedish National Film School) graduating in 2004 with the award-winning graduation film ”Kung Konrad.” Since then I’ve been working as a cinematographer on a freelance basis in everything from documentaries, television, advertising and feature films.

In 2009, I worked on what I believe was the first television production made with a DSLR camera in Sweden, ”Evas Superkoll”, a children’s series for Swedish Television (SVT). During that production, I met Guffe Funck for the first time. In the beginning there were a lot of difficulties working with digital SLR cameras. Not only were there problems with the new technology, but the camera wasn’t properly adapted to filming. So along with Guffe, we built a rig that made the camera steady and ‘easier’ to work with. Although we achieved some form of stability there was nothing in the first rig that was easy. It looked like a bazooka and made work very awkward.

Felix stör en ingenjör from Tobias Höiem-Flyckt on Vimeo.

In 2010, I worked on a longer documentary series for Swedish TV 4, ”Felix stör en ingenjör”, traveling across the globe, from Huanghoa on the border of Mongolia, through Namibia and on to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The series was shot with two cameras, a Red One and the other a DSLR. I was aware that Guffe was developing the Swedish Chameleon system and contacted him. I was lucky enough to be a test pilot for the very first rig and after each trip abroad, we discussed what was good and what needed improving, and this continual development process finally led to the Swedish Chameleon 1.0, a rig that was easy to work with and of high quality and reliability .

Most recently I have just finished shooting a short film going under the working title ”Kiruna-Kigali”. We filmed on location in Rwanda, Africa, and Luleå in northern Sweden. The camera choice was once again a digital SLR, partly due to cost, but also because of the size and agility. The film would have a documentary feel with plenty of hand-held where the camera would be in close proximity to the actors, filming in rural homes of locals, with very limited facilities and taking the conditions for what they were. The beauty of Swedish Chameleon is that you can easily customize for and adapt to most of the situations you end up in. The film will be ready in time for the Gothenburg Film Festival 2012 and later broadcast on Swedish Television. Hope everyone gets to see it.
